THE battle for the ownership of Morgan Tsvangirai’s legacy took a dramatic turn Monday when MDC-T acting President Thokozani Khupe on Monday appointed Manasa Tsvangirai – young brother of the late Morgan – as party national secretary for elections.
The appointment of Manasa was announced by MDC-T Secretary-General Douglas Mwonzora at a news conference held at the Morgan Richard Tsvangirai (Harvest House) Headquarters in Harare.
Speaking to the Zimbabwe Voice about the appointment, political analyst Mr. Maxwell Saungweme reckoned that names of deceased politicians such as Tsvangirai and Robert Mugabe still had political capital, hence the move by Khupe to rope in Tsvangirai’s family members.
“Unfortunately names of the dead in Zimbabwe still have some political capital. This is why even Nelson Chamisa says he was annoited by Tsvangirai and (President Emmerson) Mnangagwa still referred to Mugabe as baba (father) even after toppling him,” said Mr. Saungweme.
He added that Manasa as an individual has next to nothing in terms of political prowess, but the Tsvangirai name had some weight to the voters. “Manase Tsvangirai will attract a few brainwashed Tsvangirai loyalists to the Mwonzora faction but he has little political capital as an individual.
“We however need these dead people to fade away from our politics for us to have true democracy. Mugabe and Tsvangirai were bad examples, despots and strongmen. “Unfortunately our people were poisoned by these characters and still think they have to speak to their graves or appoint their relatives to get poltical blessings from the dead, buried and gone.
Apart from Manasa, the Khupe camp also boasts of Vincent Tsvangirai among its ranks. Vincent is son to the late Tsvangirai, and the current MP for Glen View South.
Meanwhile, Mwonzora also seized the press statement opportunity to insist the party will recall opposition legislators who are double dipping.
The appointment of Tsvangirai – who was not in active politics during the days of his late brother – comes at a time the MDC factions are fighting to control party properties. He becomes the third member of the Tsvangirai family to pledge his support to the Khupe faction following Vincent and Millicent’s footsteps.
During the Press conference, Mwonzora also announced the appointment of Engineer Elias Mudzuri as party deputy chairperson, with Shakespeare Mukoi coming in as national chairperson for the youth assembly.
Henry Mudzingwa will deputize Manasa as deputy secretary for elections. Mwonzora further said the party was still making arrangements to replace the party spokesperson Obert Gutu who resigned from the party.
Mwonzora further said the recalling of legislators from Parliament would continue and that the party would not hesitate to replace them. “As things stand, nothing stops us from recalling and replacing our members of Parliament,” Mwonzora said. Regarding the issue of the Morgan Tsvangirai House, Mwonzora said the building rightfully belongs to the MDC-T and dismissed as mere propaganda suggesting that a company called Harvest House Pvt Ltd were the owners.
