‘My name is amongst the best stars’: Tyra Chikocho aka Madam Boss has won the African Social Star award at the 2021 People’s Choice Awards.
Although the People’s Choice Awards are set to take place on Tuesday 7 December, E! Entertainment has already crowned the winner of the African Social Star award. Zimbabwean comedian and content creator Tyra Chikocho aka Madam Boss has been voted by the public as African Social Star of 2021. Kenya’s Azziad Nasenya and South Africa’s Witney Ramabulana came in second and third place respectively.

Fans worldwide had the opportunity to vote in 40 different categories for their favourite stars across television, music, movies and pop culture. For the third time in history, the People’s Choice Awards opened a category that celebrates Africa’s social media stars and influencers.
Other nominees in the African Social Star award category included dazzling South African media personalities Lasizwe Dambuza, Mihlali Ndamase, Boity Thulo and Nigerian stars Falz and content creator Sofiay Ibrahim aka The Oddity.
Before venturing into comedy on social media, Tyra Chikocho kicked off her entertainment career as a gospel singer. The 36-year-old became the first Zimbabwean comedian to surpass 1 million followers on Facebook.
Her acting career took off when she was cast in the Nollywood series The Offspring and on SABC 1’s spin-off of Ugly Betty, uBettina Wethu.
Sharing her excitement about winning the African Social Star of 2021 award she said: “I can’t believe it! I don’t know how to explain how I’m feeling right, now. I’m so emotional, I’m crying and very happy at the same time – I’m just a girl from a rural area and now my name is amongst the best stars in the industry.”
