Court Sets Trial Date For Harare Businessman 

Harare Magistrate Isheunesu Matova has ordered the State to kickstart trial of Patrick Mutenha alias Chimpa, who is facing two charges of Extortion and Contravening Section 6 of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s Microfinance Act [Chapter 24:29].

Mutenha, was apprehended in a movie style arrest by a cracked team of Detectives from the CID Vehicle Theft Squad in April of last year [2024], after youthful Harare Businessman Shingai Levison Muringi had reported him for extortion and intimidation.

 

Mutenha allegedly name dropped senior politicians as he sought to intimidate Muringi.Detectives from the CID Vehicle Theft Squad have successfully obtained key evidence needed by the State to solidify its cases against MutenhaDetails are that Mutenha advanced Muringi a loan of USD35,000.00 (popularly known as chimbadzo) against the later’s Toyota Hilux GD6 which was used as surety.

 

 

 

 

Its alleged that on the 27th of April 2024, Muringi repaid the loan to the tune of USD55,000.00, including the interests accrued for a duration of two months.Upon repayment of the loan, Muringi demanded his vehicle back but Mutenha allegedly refused to hand it over, stating that he needed an extra USD15,000.00, telling the complainant that he was untouchable, in the process name-dropping the First Family and popular gold dealer Scott Sakupwanya.

 

The act prompted Muringi to report the matter to the Police, leading to Mutenha’s arrest.The State is the complainant in the charge of Contravening Section 6 (1) (a) (2) of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s Microfinance Act [Chapter 24:29] and is represented by RBZ’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), Shingai Levison Muringi and the CID Vehicle Theft Sqaud as its chief witnesses.

 

On the charge of Extortion as defined in Section 134 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform Act) Chapter 9:23, Mutenha will be put to the test by the evidence from Muringi, who is the complainant.As as series of events unfolded, Mutenha filed a counter Fraud claim against Muringi. However, the matter was struck off the roll by the Courts.

Mutenha failed to turn up for trial on several occasions leading to the court removing Muringi from remand through a Refusal of Remand.

 

Muringi was represented by Harare lawyer Mr. Claude Bare of Claude , Petronellah & Nomazulu At Law.

 

 

 

As as series of events unfolded, Mutenha filed a counter Fraud claim against Muringi. However, the matter was struck off the roll by the Courts.

Mutenha failed to turn up for trial on several occasions leading to the court removing Muringi from remand through a Refusal of Remand.
