Sad confirming 37 fatalities Midlands Provincial Police Officer, Commissioner Partson Nyabadza said

37 lives lost to drownings in Midlands province amid heavy rainsMORE than 30 people have drowned in Midlands Province since the onset of the current rainy season, with authorities confirming 37 fatalities, more than double the figure recorded during the previous rainy period.

Police say the increase in drowning incidents has become a major concern, particularly as most rivers and dams are now filled to capacity following consistent rainfall across the province.

The mining community of Kwekwe has been the hardest hit, accounting for more than 18 of the recorded deaths.

Midlands Provincial Police Officer, Commissioner Partson Nyabadza said several tragic incidents have contributed to the rising toll.

“As you might be aware, part of our duties is to protect property and lives. We have had some good rains this season, but the sad reality is that we can’t ignore the loss of lives in the process. In Silobela, which is in Kwekwe District, we lost seven lives at the Mineral Base Mine. We also have five people who were swept away in a scotch cart trying to cross the Sebakwe River, and only two survived. In Mwenezi under Chief Chingoma, we recorded another fateful event. All in all, we lost 37 lives, which is just too much. We need to preserve lives,” he said.

With the Meteorological Services Department projecting another wet spell in the coming days, law enforcement agencies have urged the public to exercise extreme caution.

“According to the weather forecast, the rainy season is not yet over. As such, do not attempt to cross flooded rivers and bridges. When there is too much rain, avoid travelling. Avoid hiding under trees when it’s raining to prevent lightning-related accidents. Let’s avoid drinking and driving and observe speed limits,” Commissioner Nyabadza added.

Authorities have also appealed to parents and guardians to closely monitor children, while drivers and miners are being urged to prioritise safety as the rains persist.
