Zimbabwean authorities have deployed police officers nationwide in a sweeping show of force, issuing a stern warning to citizens just one day before a planned mass demonstration is set to test the nation's political stability. The move establishes a tense atmosphere, with the government vowing to meet any "unlawful" gatherings with the "full wrath of the law."
A Vow to Maintain Order
In a formal press statement issued on Thursday, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) announced that "comprehensive security measures have been put in place to ensure peace, law, and order prevails" before, during, and after the planned events of October 17, 2025.
Citing the police's constitutional mandate, the statement confirmed that the Commissioner-General of Police has deployed officers across all provinces to protect the public and key infrastructure. The government made its position clear, stating that "any attempts to engage in unlawful demonstrations, gatherings, or processions will be met with the full wrath of the law."
"Go About Your Daily Activities Without Fear"
Despite the heavy security posture, the police implored the public to proceed with their normal routines. "Members of the public are implored to go about their daily activities without fear," the statement reads.
Authorities have assured the public that all essential services, "including schools, businesses, public transport and government institutions, will continue to operate as usual."
At the same time, the police issued a specific warning against online activity that could inflame the situation, urging the public "not to be misled or intimidated by rumours, misinformation, or threats circulating on social media platforms." Any "acts of violence, threats, vandalism, or incitement to commit crime will be severely dealt with," the statement warned.
A Plea for Public Vigilance
In a concluding appeal, the police have called on citizens to report any "suspicious activities, threats, or disturbances" to their nearest police station. A National Complaints Desk has also been made available for the public to contact.
