Fake Cambridge exams: Parents call on police to act

Parents of 16 students from Destiny Achievers College in Harare are demanding police action over a fake Cambridge O-Level exam scam. The school’s owner, Ms. Cynthia Gambiza, allegedly took exam fees (around US$600–US$1,000 per student) but failed to register the students for the official exams in November 2023. She promised they would write in June 2024 instead.

However, the June 2024 exam was fake. Students noticed the Maths paper was the same as a past paper, just with a new date. The school rented a venue and claimed it had partnered with a real Cambridge centre, which was false.

Parents lost a total of about US$11,000. Some had reported the issue last year, but were told to wait. Ms. Gambiza appeared in court in January for a related US$4,000 fraud case and is still on trial. She has been avoiding contact, and the school says she was hospitalised.

Police have not yet acted, and parents are frustrated by the delays. Commissioner Paul Nyathi said he would follow up on the case.
