CHITUNGWIZA residents have expressed growing frustration over the local authority’s continued failure to provide a lasting solution to the town’s persistent sewage challenges, which they say are threatening their health and general well-being.

A strong stench from raw sewage is what greets visitors and residents alike in most parts of the dormitory town, where overflowing effluent has become a daily reality.

Concerned residents are now appealing to central government and other responsible authorities to urgently intervene.

“We are living in constant fear of a cholera outbreak because raw sewage continuously flows, we are now tired of living in this situation,” one resident said.

“Toddlers and young children always fall into the sewage trenches that we have dug, and we do not know how the sewage challenge is going to end,” added another resident.

“We drink water from boreholes and wells, but we are not sure if the water is safe anymore, considering the rate at which sewage is flowing inside homes,” a third resident lamented.

Chitungwiza Municipality has acknowledged the crisis, attributing the continued sewer bursts to ageing infrastructure.

The local authority says efforts are underway to replace damaged pipes and rehabilitate key sewer lines.

Municipal spokesperson, Mr Tafadzwa Kachiko, said council was not sitting on its laurels.

“We take cognisance of the sewage problem in our area, but as council, we are working flat out to address the challenge. We appeal to residents for a little patience as we have already started rehabilitating the main sewer line in Zengeza. Chitungwiza does not have adequate running water, and we are pinning our hopes on government dam projects. There are plans to get water from Muchekeranwa Dam so that the town will have enough water supplies to enable the smooth flow of raw effluent,” he said.

While the situation continues to deteriorate due to lack of running water and poor infrastructure, it is hoped that the ongoing rehabilitation of both water and sewer systems will bring some relief to long-suffering residents.Haayi finally some1 had to say something about it ipapa nepanaRufaro haa taabho veduweChitown kana Cholera yakatisurrender💔.Ukaona zvakurambwa nenhunzi chaidzo zvakaoma😭😭😭😭
