HARARE — Linda Masarira, Lead President of the Labour Economists and African Democrats (LEAD) party, has publicly thrown her support behind Zimbabwe's proposed Constitutional Amendment No. 3 Bill. In a recent interview, Masarira outlined her party's endorsement of significant changes to the country's electoral process and presidential term limits.
Support for a Parliamentary Vote
Speaking on the proposed changes to how the head of state is elected, Masarira urged citizens to be open to an indirect electoral system.
"It is very important for Zimbabweans to embrace and to think deeply about voting for the president in parliament," Masarira stated.
Representing LEAD, she described this legislative shift as the "best foot forward," specifically noting its potential benefits for a "young democracy like Zimbabwe".
Backing the 7-Year Term Extension
In addition to changing the presidential voting mechanism, Masarira confirmed her party's official support for extending the duration a president remains in office.
"We are also supporting the term extension to seven years," she announced.
Masarira justified the extension by arguing that the country requires longer uninterrupted periods between election cycles to achieve its macroeconomic goals. She explained that, from her party's perspective, Zimbabwe needs more years to dedicate its focus "on development, on growth, on nation-building". - Zimbo LIVE Harare
