"unfair and unkind" online commentary targeting Zimbabweans living abroad.Zimbabwean musician Baba Harare has issued a strong statement in support of the UK diaspora community, calling for unity and respect following recent "unfair and unkind" online commentary targeting Zimbabweans living abroad.
A Return to the Stage
The artist, who recently returned to the spotlight after a two-year hiatus, shared his perspective following a self-funded trip to the United Kingdom for the "UK JITI reunion show" in Birmingham on November 28.
Admitting that he did not know what to expect after his time away from the music scene, Baba Harare described the reception he received as "overwhelming" and "deeply emotional". He credited this experience with reminding him of the enduring power of music and the loyalty of his fanbase.
Defending the Diaspora
Addressing current social media conversations that have been critical of Zimbabweans living overseas, Baba Harare countered the narrative that the diaspora consists of "people who failed in life".
Drawing from his own professional experience, he highlighted the vital role the diaspora plays in the Zimbabwean music industry:
Economic Support: He identified the community as one of his "biggest earners" and noted that their support at events ranging from Zimfest to headline shows has been "consistent and genuine".
Cultural Promotion: He credited Zimbabweans abroad with playing a "huge role" in promoting local music internationally and creating global awareness for artists.
Call for Unity While clarifying that he was not apologizing on behalf of anyone else, the musician emphasized his desire to stand in solidarity with his supporters abroad.
"Let us choose respect. Let us choose unity. Let us remember that we are one people, wherever we may live," he concluded, expressing his personal gratitude and value for the community. - Zimbo LIVE London
