The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) can take your car keys at a roadblock if there's a valid reason

ZRP officers and a motorist were involved in a confrontation after the officers took his car keys.

Watch the video in the comments section! These roadblocks are not necessary they just want some money surely something must be done to stop this menaceThe constitution says

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) can take your car keys at a roadblock if there's a valid reason, like major roadworthiness issues (unregistered, unlicensed), but they shouldn't for minor things like a missing triangle, and you have rights to verify the roadblock and the officer's ID; they can't just seize keys randomly, and you can film them, but avoidDear Traffic Authorities/ Police Commissioner/ Relevant Ministry,

Zimbabwe’s roads are vital for our daily lives, economy, and property-related businesses like construction deliveries and Airbnb guest travel. However, the current system of immediate fines for first-time or minor offenses such as slight speeding, improper parking, reflectors, brake lights or failure to signal often punishes rather than educates, leading to resentment and repeat issues.

I suggest police adopt a tiered caution system:

• First offense (minor): Verbal or written caution with education on the rule and road safety tips.

• Second offense: Mandatory online/offline awareness course (free or low-cost).

• Third offense: Fine + points system.

This approach, proven effective in countries like the UK and South Africa, reduces recidivism by up to 30% (per traffic studies), builds compliance through understanding, and frees resources for serious violations. It would foster safer Harare roads, support local economies, and promote fairness especially for hardworking first offenders.

Let’s prioritize education over punishment for a more road-smart Zimbabwe.
