Tragedy Strikes as Stallion Cruise Bus Overturns on Kwekwe Route

KWEKWE, ZIMBABWE – Emergency responders and local police were called to the scene of a harrowing accident involving a Stallion Cruise bus, which veered off the road and overturned, leaving several passengers injured and causing significant traffic disruptions.

The image from the scene shows the massive bus lying on its side in the brush, with debris scattered along the shoulder of the highway. Local authorities and onlookers can be seen assessing the wreckage as they await heavy recovery equipment to clear the scene.

Details of the Incident

Preliminary reports suggest the accident occurred when the driver lost control of the vehicle, though the exact cause—whether mechanical failure, road conditions, or human error—remains under investigation.

This incident adds to a troubling string of accidents involving the Stallion Cruise line over the past year. In late 2025 and early 2026, the company has faced intense scrutiny following several high-profile crashes:

  • The Sebakwe River Tragedy: A major accident near the Sebakwe River (near Kwekwe) recently claimed 12 lives, heightening fears regarding safety on the Harare-Bulawayo highway.
  • Previous Collisions: In June 2025, a Stallion bus collided with two trucks on the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls road, resulting in 3 deaths and 18 injuries.

A Growing Call for Road Safety

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have repeatedly urged public transport operators to adhere to speed limits and ensure vehicles are roadworthy. National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi has previously emphasized that "negligence and misjudgment" remain the leading causes of these fatal encounters.

"Our roads cannot continue to be sites of mourning. We call upon all bus operators to prioritize the lives of their passengers over profit and speed."

Survivor Accounts

Witnesses at the scene described a chaotic environment as passengers scrambled to exit the overturned vehicle. Local clinics and Kwekwe General Hospital have been placed on high alert to treat those with injuries ranging from minor lacerations to more severe trauma.

As the investigation continues, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development is expected to review the safety records of long-distance bus operators to prevent further loss of life during the busy 2026 travel season
